Nan and I really didn't strike up a friendship until our high school days.  We started out working in the "basket Room" of the Public Swimming Pool, spending many afternoons together, and then graduated to teach swimming lessons in the mornings and lifeguard duty in the afternoon...........days we both loved.  Actually I remember well when we were on the Yearbook Staff together, we traveled to the University of Iowa Yearbook Workshop the summer between our Junior & Senior years...........got to stay in the girl's dorm, Burge Hall, and attend a week long training on tips for yearbook presentations.  We thought we were really "hot stuff" to be allowed to be on the Uof I campus for this special event.  The other fond memory I have is a time in Chicago, shortly after I had started my short lived career in fashion merchandising at an exclusive women's store downtown on State Street.  I lived in an apartment up near Evanston, IL and Nan called, saying she was coming out to Chicago from college in New Mexico.  She was madly in love with a fellow she met at college, who was from Evergreen Park, IL.  He had planned to show her Chicago and her parents, "Peaches & Burt", expected her to be staying with this guy's family, which created a little "white lie"..........she asked me to please cover for her, because his family was out of town, so she told her folks she had made arrangements to stay with ME !  She didn't want them to know, because they didn't approve of the trip unless she could stay with me, rather than being unsupervised at his folk's home.  Nan actually came by to see me and phoned her parents to check in, to confirm she was actually there.  We had concocted this little "story" and stuck to it.  Not too much later Nan married this fellow, and they enjoyed several years together........until Nana's progressive kidney illness was diagnosed & took it's toll on their relationship.  It was great to get to see her again the year we had our reunion down on the Riverboat, and she looked as wonderful as ever..........we reminisced about those magical summer days and laughed so much about our little "cover-up" in Chicago long ago !  She was a great gal !
