Jack Sears
Looking forward to seeing you folks in 2016. My personal challenge, in a run-up to the next FMHS reunion, is the 2016 RAGBRAI XLIV. I challenged my younger Brother Brad & we're planning the 2016 insanity now. RAGBRAI gets so many entry requests, they conduct a lottery to select the 8500 rider field. So, it's not guaranteed we'll get in, but, if not, we'll do some other multi-day ride.
Now, I'm 72, as many pounds overweight, workout sometimes, & Brad is 14 years younger, works out a lot, and looks like he could be on the cover of Mens Fitness. His reply to my challenge was: " averaging 67 miles per day for 7 days...piece of cake....but, it's just a ride, and YOU don't have to ride everyday". OK my Brother, now I'm more determined than ever to give this a go. I have contacted my biking consigliere and good friend Alan Bernstein. He's a serious bicyclist who has done individual time trials. He's trying to talk me into trading in my Trek hybrid for a more serious road bike. I'm not sure about that, since RAGBRAI is not a timed competition. But, anyways, people on road bikes routinely pass me on the bike trails going really really fast. I'm doing 12 mph & it seems like they are doing 20.
The weight challenge is another iteration of: increase workout times, eat less. Multi-day bicycle ride training is harder for me My personal best is 50 miles in about 4 hours. Next day, a much shorter ride, or, it a rest day. The problem is, I've never done several days in a row of that distance/speed. One limiting factor is how much time in the saddle can the old rear end take over a 7 day ride?
Any multi-day bicycle riders out there? Please advise.
Cheers all,
Jack
