Up-date on my husband...we are doing pretty good considering. Ready to start wk. #3 of 6 of radiation and chemo pill. Larry stopped taking nausea med., didn't need it. We have great friends who volunteer to take him to Quincy each day. Takes 40 mins. to get there and 7 mins. for the treatment. Larry's appetite is very good and he's feeling good. Just a little more tired than usual, so it always be could worse. We feel blessed to have family and soooo many friends praying and lifting us up. I'd like to thank everyone again for thoughts and concerns for us both. GOD IS GOOD.

Linda

Hey to all 14 of us who were able to meet out at Chandler's today for good food ( that roast beef sandwich I had  was tops) and for good conversation !  What a great time it was... catching up on what is going on in our daily lives  and what future plans we might have in the hopper.  Good for us...let's meet again next month at "The Celler" in Keokuk.  Untill then, may we all stay healthy and think young!  Afterall, we are a long way off from that century mark!

Hugs to all

Happy Easter to all!

So great to hear that Larry Schrader is doing so well. I know Linda that all the prayers are really helping! So sorry to miss the March Luncheon and for those of you who think I have had fun in Florida for the last 5 weeks I am telling you that it has been a VERY COLD March.

I cannot wait for Spring and to see the "girls" for lunch in April. Take care everyone!

Sharon

Hi Sharon...welcome back to good ole Iowa.  I can sympathize with you on that weather in Florida. The 2 weeks I was there ( 02/09 thru the 23rd ) was very cold.  One night it was only 2 degrees different then in FM.  I only got 2 days at Fort Myers beach which didn't make me a happy camper. I was glad to return home.  See you soon...we did miss you at March luncheon. See you at the " the Celler"...until then...hugs,Nancy

Karan Kreighbaum (Faul)

OK Sharon... I got your email requesting that more of the class members utilize our Message Forum. I'm among the guilty! Between emailing, facebook and telephone texting, I just don't have anything new to message about! However, I'll try.

Here I am, at almost 70 years old, with my first broken/cracked bone.   I took a fall 2 weeks ago at a cemetary when we were putting Easter flowers on the graves. Long story short... I fell over a grave and landed on my husbands foot (shoe). Now picture this... I'm trying to push a solar light into the 'soft' ground, Evidently the ground wasn't as soft as I thought it was... the post on the light broke and I went tumbling forward. My husband was standing in front of me, and I landed on his foot. (No, I didn't break his foot! And so far, he's not limping... that's a miracle!) I'm sure it was a pretty sight with me sprawled on top of my father-in-law's grave.  I don't think he'd mind. He always was a tiny bit chauvinistic... thought women should kneel at the men's feet. (Just kidding... he was a very easy-going chauvinist & I loved him... he mainly just wanted to be waited on... we all know how those old men are!) Anyway, the cracked rib isn't so bad... but the fact that I just came down (again) with a case of bronchitis... coughing while holding your rib cage so it doesn't hurt so much is not an easy thing.

Now... I've done my part for now. So it's up to some other classmates to get on the bandwagon and do some messaging.

BTW... welcome back to Iowa Sharon... you were missed!

Linda Kirchner (Schrader)

You should write more often, Karan...very informative and entertaining. But I knew you could write since 8th. grade. Sure wish more people would write on here. It's sooo interesting to read what people have to say and what they're doing. It's the only way we have to hear what's happening from a few classmates. Once a wk. wouldn't be too much to ask from EVERYONE who checks this page. We are doing pretty good here in Hamilton. Larry has one wk. left of radiation and we're praying it's working good. I'm looking fwd to getting a new kitchen, starting in a wk. or so. Have some garden planted and looking to warmer weather. Take care all.....Linda

Thank you all for your kind, caring, compasionate interaction since Linda's passing this past December.  Your reflections of our lives in Fort Madison have been refreshing and uplifting during our times of grief.  We have been touched by the contacts that have been renewed from all around this great country.   Fort Madison roots are strong and everlasting. The family is moving in a positive direction knowing that our lives will not be the same, but  with the knowledge Linda is in a better place.  Our doors in Marshall, MI are always wide open for you all.

Susie Peacock (Vacilek)

Thanks for reminding us to stay in touch.  I'm sure so many have families and are busy with maybe grandchildren and all the doings we just don't think about all the really great times in our own past that we can now re-share. As for me, still living in Colorado(cold yet here with more snow coming). We have lived her since 1997. I have 2 daughters living in Oklahoma, 3 grandchildren, boy 8 years, girl almost 3 and a girl 3 months. Ashton, Jayci, Olivia.  I have not yet gotten to Oklahoma to see her. I still have my 2 sisters, both still in Iowa. My husband stopped working after his heart by-passes back in 06(I think it was) Myself, I am still working in a law office 40 hour weeks and love it or maybe it is just the money!  We don't do a lot in the winter, go to the mountains a couple time, take in the Octoberfeast in Breckinridge and the ice carvings.  Summer is really nice here, I like working in the yard and gardening and like most of us(I think) I talk a lot about the weather :).  I wish all of you reading the messages the best and may one day we visit again. To all stay healthy.

Here's something interesting.....I received an email from my cousin, Marilyn Cooper Lee, she was a senior when we were freshmen. She said there's a 50"s reunion to take place in Branson, MO sometime in Sept. If anyone is interested, I will find out the dates. There could be a group from our class go down, too. After all, we knew and looked up to the seniors. It'd be fun to see if we recognized anyone. I think we should try to plan a class mini reunion in Branson anyway. It's fun there, so much to do, golf, shopping, shows, shopping, fishing, eating and also...shopping. We go whenever possible. It is 6 hrs. from where I live. We stay for $59 plus tax a night. I know a few others from the class who go down, too. How about some response.....Linda

Sharon, Linda and other regulars.

Just to let you know, I do check the site weekly and follow your comments closely.

Marco island sounds great but i prefer Ft. Lauderdale and Key West.

The 50's reunion sounds great.

Jean and I will celebrate our 43rd Wedding Anniversary this month and after seeing the movie, Hope Springs, I pledge to give her something more than a water heater.

Our daughter-in Law is undergoing the first round of chemo for breast cancer so we are caring for their 5 kids, A set of twins seven years old and a set of triplets four years old. We meet ourselves coming and going.

Have to run. Keep up the good work.

There doesn't seem to be enough hours in a day anymore!  I am still working full time and with tax filing day on Monday, April 15, I have been working 14-16 hrs a day to get my clients either done and filed or on extension.  This is my 46th year of preparing taxes and 27 years of owning my own firm.  It has been a challenging tax season with all the happenings in Congress!  Everything but April 15 is running 2 1/2 weeks late.  By Monday, I will have prepared over 750 individual, partnerships, corporations, LLC's, and trust returns with another 200+ on extension.

Business returns with payroll and sales taxes are due April 30 and the time deadlines never stop.

I turn 70 on April 15 (Monday) and still going strong.  However, this past week I caught a lung infection with the Santa Ana winds and am on antibiotics and cough syrup to get me thru the day and night.

A short trip to somewhere the first of May to catch my breath before the seminar trek starts on Mother's Day.  Wish I had time to spend a few days in HI.

I read the Message Board everytime there is a birthday announcement.

I love to write but not so sure you want to hear about my "always something happening" life.

More later after April 15.

Melinda Lang (Bachman)

Greetings from Michigan.  Anxiously waiting warmer weather so I can work on my small flower garden.Just got back from six weeks in citrus Hills, Fl which is about 90 miles north of Tampa near Chrystal River, Inverness, Ocala.  I have many friends there and rent a condo for a month or so each winter.  Like everyone else who has been to Florida this year the weather wasn't the greatest.  I did get a little tan and if my freckles would go together I'd have a great tan!

Looking forward to visit my son and his family near Marquette, MI when the weather gets better and school is out.  My grandsons are 16 and 14 with a sister 3.  I also babysit once day a week with my 17 month old granddaughter who lives near me. She has brought so much joy to my life.

As most of you say "I'm busy all the time but don't know what i do!"  I do go to movies, play Mah Jongg, and of course the eating lunch out with friends.  In addition I'm on the board of the condo association which keeps me busy.

Linda so glad to learn that Larry is doing better.  I also like the idea of Branson for a trip.  I've been there several times as my brother has a time share there.  The only situation keeping me from going is that I'm going on a cruise in September. Do let me know what dates the trip would be and I'll see if it is workable.

Sharon:  I'll try to be better at the message forum - at least reading it.  It's a great idea and thanks for the reminder as time flies by to fast.

Hope life is treating everyone well.

Melinda

Nan Nelson (Hays)

yesHi to all coming on board this forum...this is great and a reminder to me to keep at it also.  You can put me on the list for the Sept. mini class reunion in Branson.  Since I'm a person who connects better... the more I see people... I will certainly try and go.  Just post the date if it comes together and I will put it on my priority list.

As far as what is happening with me right now...not allot to say but I can be good with the chit-chat.  Waiting for spring to decide to stick around.  Just trying to get my yard cleaned up from debris and locating where my perennials are and noticing the weeds have no problem in coming back.angry  But, I am passionate about gardening...enough to take the pros & cons and still find enjoyment.  With 70 rolling around...it is a wake -up call to make the most of each & every day ahead of you.  I love to see the sun come up & set in the evening.

I love hearing from everyone.  To those who are "under the weather" I pray for fast healing.

Hugs, Nancy Hays

SO GLAD TO HEAR FROM BILL ORR, MARCIA CONLEY,MELINDA LANG AND NANCY NELSON. THANKS FOR WRITING!

omg! Bill how do you and your bride take care of all those kids. I would be dead. God Bless your daughter-in-law and may she see a full and speedy recovery.

Marcia I don't know how you do all that you do. Happy Birthday on Monday.

Melinda I concur with you about the Florida weather. Ugh. At least we got a little suntan.

Nancy I want to see your garden this summer when you get it planted and growing. I use to garden but the back won't let me do that anymore. I miss it.

As for the 50's reunion in Branson I am starting a list so Bill, Melinda, and Nancy you are at the top of my list and oh, Linda Kirchner too.

Happy Spring everyone!

Martha Waters (Krueger)

I am ready anytime to go to Branson. And I live only 80 miles from there.
Today, and the last 10 days I've been camping my way to my nephews wedding in Las Vegas. Now that he's married I am camping my way thru the next couple of weeks in 5 national parks in southern utah in my mini van.

Right my brother Tom & John & I a are sitting in the flamingo hotel bird plaza waiting to walk the strip to view free shows. We don't gamble. :)

04/14/13 09:18 PM #249

Sandra Buckley (Matthews)

Okay Sharon,  Add me to the list of "responders" on the Message Forum.  Here's the most recent news from he Matthews' household.

Like the rest of you who are writing, we all seem to be busier as retirees than when we all worked and raised our families, and that's some good news !  It means our brains and bodies are still working, albeit with a few creaks and cracks and forgetfullness along the way !  How many of us are either experiencing "age appropriate" (a kind term my eye doctor uses) cataracts or have already had cataract surgery ?????  For myself, the cataracts got growing much too quickly last year and I had surgery to get news lens in both eyes.........6 weeks apart.  The most simple surgery I have ever had, and now I can pass my driving test without having to wear glasses for seeing in the distance!!

Bill is a diehard golfer, playing at least 3 times a week, and more when he participates in local tournaments on the weekends.  He's still waiting to break 80, and I hope he does soon.......before the aging body and arthritic knees gve out on him.  Meanwhile, he leaves here this coming Saturday morning, April 20, to spend a week with Terry Noonan and David Brown in Alabama, playing 6 straight days of golf on the Robert Trent Jones Alabama Trails golf courses he designed. Good luck to all of them, as these courses are some of most challenging golf courses in teh USA.  Then the second week of May, those same 3 guys will all be meeting up at John Frey's in Ohio for a camping and fishing trip at a State Park about an hur from John's home.  I've lost track, but I beleive this is the 6th year they have done a fishing trip, going as far as northern Ontario, Canada, Wisconsin, Lake Erie and Dale Hollow Lake, on the Kentucky/Tennessee border.

The rest of Bill's time is spent as Chairman of the Beaufort County Board of Directors for United Way.  This is his 3rd year serving on the Board and his second year as Charman.   This part of eastern North Carolina is quite disadvantaged, lots of unemployment and welfare.  Bill aso LOVES to read and has a NOOK which is constantly under his nose, when he's home. And then there's the church choir..........I converted hinm to the Methodist Church when we got married, and ever since 1970, beginning in Louisviile, KY at Crescent Hill United Methodist Church, we have sung togeher in all of our church choirs, as we moved around with DuPont.

As for me, I gave up golf last year.........too many lower back problems.  I decided I was not ready to go the surgery route (at least not yet) of having fusions and rods and screws from L-3 down to S-1.  I still play lots of bridge, in a couples club, in a couples Marathon club, and in a gal's only Maarathon club.  I'm a volunteer in a court program for Foster Children, as an outside Advocate for the child, making sure all situations have been researched by the Social Workers before any decision is made by the Court Judge for the primary parent involved.  My passion, and most outside volunteer invovment is with the 30+ year old National Alliance on Mental Illness, known by NAMI.  There are chapters in EVERY one of the 50 US States, and a total of 35 in North Carolina.  I am on the Board for the Pitt County local chapter, but am most involved with the NAMI on Campus chapter at East Carolina University in Greenville, about 20 miles from us.  Seventy percent of mental illness symptoms and diagnosis occur between the ages of 16 and 24, so college age students are highly at risk of this gentically passed illness flaring up during their college years.  I have been honored by being invited to the National NAMI Convention in San Antonio, TX this coming June 27 through July 1.  It should be an exiting and informative opportunity to hear so many great speakers and find other ways to educate and advocate for those challenged by living with a mental illness.  Our 41 year old adopted son, Jay, was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia at the age of 15.........a long hard struggle for him and fo those of us who love him so dearly.  Meanwhile, we travel quite frequently to Charleston, SC to see our youngest son, Joe, and his lovely wife, Tamrah, and our precious granddaughters Aila,7, and Tatum, 4.  They are moving the end of April to the Jacksonville, FL area for a new job opportunity for Joe.  It will add an additional 3-4 hours to what was a 6 hour driving trip, so we may start flying south once in awhile.  I can barely stand to go more than 2 months without a grankids "fix".

Hope I haven't bored everyone to tears wth all of this "stuff".........Sharon asked us to update what was happening in our lives, so I think I did my part for at least a few months !!!

Blessings to all............Sandy & Bill Matthews

My goodness Sandy! I'm worn out just reading about all the things you and Bill do! I thought I kept active... but I'm gonna have to really get busy just to be within viewing distance of the same catagory as you two! wink Makes me proud to be a member of the same age group!!!
